Some interesting advice I heard recently was to find your place—or places—that allow your head and heart to communicate.

What this means to me is to not live life or make all my decisions from either my head or my heart alone. It’s important not to rely only on facts and information that are black and white. Just as it is important not to make decisions strictly from the heart. By doing either, you leave out an important blend of information that helps guide us through life.

The heart often wants to bring happiness and pleasure. Though these states are wonderful, they are not realistic in every life situation. Too much pleasure in daily life is an imbalance and negates areas that deserve honest, concerned attention.

Living only in the head is also limiting. When relying solely on logic, we don’t recognize intuition, sensing, or feeling. Logic and factual information are not enough. Not everything in life should be decided by facts alone. Love and friendships are two examples of areas in life that don’t always follow logic. To make decisions in relationships with only the head limits possibilities.

When experiencing life with a balance between head and heart, we avoid the disparity that often results from honoring only one. The balance will not always be in equal proportion, but rather weighted more or less depending on the situation.

When out of balance, a person can continually enter into relationships or friendships that are more harmful than enriching and supportive. Likewise, creating relationships only on what is logical doesn’t foster true care with another. These relationships are one-sided. It’s balance that helps foster resilience in relationships. And relationships are only one area of life. Deciding on a new house also requires balance—considering both what logically makes sense and what would feel like a home, not just a house. This kind of thinking can be applied to many—possibly all—areas of life.

Now that the balance has been identified, the next part is finding your place—or places—where your head and heart can communicate. What was suggested is not to assume that just because you are committed to balancing your head and heart in decision-making, you’ll always be in the right setting to do so. On a busy day or in a busy place, it’s often impossible to hear both and know what the best balance is for you.

For many, when making decisions, quieting down inner chatter is important in order to coordinate the thoughts of head and heart for the best balance in a given situation. If being out in nature is important for you, find your outdoor place—or places—where you can be quiet enough to connect with your inner self. Nature is a powerful place for many, though it is not the only place where inner connection can be attained. Find your place—inside or outside—where your head and heart can communicate together, to achieve the balance that is right for each particular thought.
