Some of you will be familiar with the Hawaiian practice of ho’oponopono. For those who are not, it is often expressed as: “I love you, I’m sorry, please forgive me, thank you.”
That is a great deal of meaning held within a few simple words. And yet, that is also what gives it such depth and power within relationships. It serves as a reminder of what is truly at the heart of connection.
It is important to love another person. It is even more important to remember that love is not always simple or easy. It often comes with misunderstanding, tension, and moments of repair. In those moments, the ability to say “I’m sorry” and to offer forgiveness becomes essential.
Forgiveness and sincere apology are humbling. They bring relationships into deeper layers of honesty, vulnerability, and commitment.
It is often easy to recognize when we have been wronged, and much harder to say “I’m sorry.” Yet, like so many aspects of relationship, this is part of a larger cycle. If we expect others to feel safe enough to apologize to us so we can forgive, then we must also be willing to offer that same openness and humility ourselves.
There are people who say “I’m sorry” for every small thing. This is not the same as genuine humility. True apology is intentional. It is grounded, clear, and sincere. Likewise, asking for forgiveness in an honest way creates space for another person to genuinely forgive.
It is also important to recognize that there are moments when we are not responsible for someone else’s pain. In those cases, we may still say, “I am sorry you are experiencing this,” as an expression of empathy rather than responsibility. That, too, can be sincere and meaningful.
Ho’oponopono is not about perfection. It is about presence. It is about repair. It is about returning again and again to the heart of connection with humility and care.
And so, with a sincere and humble heart: Ho’oponopono.
