There are many mystical beings well-known from the faerie realm, such as unicorns, sirens, trolls, and so many more. However, many are unaware there are also animals that live in both our earthen realm and the faerie realm. Here are just a few of the numerous magical and mystical animals—just a beginning to become aware of the many wonderful beings who are here to help us in our world and hopefully thin the veil between the two worlds.

More Commonly Known

  • Griffin – A noble animal with the plumed wings and talons of an eagle and the body, tail, and back legs of a lion. They are considered clear-sighted and powerful. They are said to possess the ability to fly and have immense strength.

*** They are a symbol of wealth and are also considered to be symbolic of divine power and heavenly protection. Their gift to those they watch is strength, wealth, protection, and connection with the divine.

  • Dragons – Often seen as flying serpents, dragons started in the waters, moved to within the earth then above land, and eventually became fliers. They were natural herbivores, eating only water and land plants for nourishment. When beings wanted to harvest flight, they fed the dragons meat to help them gain power. This is when they became fire breathers—to release excess unused power foreign to their natural biological system. It is my belief the Loch Ness Monster might be a water dragon. And they are seen and not seen as they live deep within, knowing the tunnels and passageways within the seas, as well as living between the veils.

*** They are a profound symbol of mastery, spiritual awakening, and the journey towards self-realization. They encourage embracing personal power, facing life with courage, and seeking deeper spiritual truths, making dragons a revered guide in the journey of life. Their gift to those under their care is self-realization, mastery of personal abilities, connection to deeper spiritual truths, and personal evolution.

  • Phoenix – The immortal phoenix, it is believed, never truly dies, although its desire and energy are limited to living up to about 500 years. Since they build their nests in the highest places, from branches, the resins in the branches would catch fire from the heat of the sun and burn all. As a result of their desire to serve, they were granted the ability of rebirth, so they can continually rise from the ashes, just as the fiery sun “dies” and is “reborn” every morning.

*** They symbolize transformation, rebirth, hope, and the continual rise from the ashes. Because the phoenix willingly sacrifices itself to death, its ability to regenerate and gain awareness and spiritual growth is a gift to those it watches over.

  • Trolls – Guardians of the Earth, especially mountains and sacred spaces. Every significant mountain and mountain range has its own troll to help maintain spiritual protection and power. They are solitary by nature but appreciate occasional community connection. It is my understanding that the troll who guarded the bridge in Three Billy Goats Gruff did so when asked by the high Wizarding Council to protect sacred grassland that was being overgrazed.

*** These supernatural beings should be respected because they have been called on to protect sacred spaces. Today these spaces include more than just Earthen items like mountains, grasslands, and such.

  • Sirens – There has been a wrongful telling of sirens as spreaders of chaos. However, they are songstresses. As companions of Persephone, they asked Zeus to help find her. Even though she was in the underworld and could not hear them, they traveled the earth singing their song. Many cultures have also called on the sirens, through knotted belts, to help bring back to them loved ones who were out to sea. They have many different songs, from protection to location, and even destruction when deemed appropriate.

*** They symbolize and bring to those they call to desire, power, protection, and the safety of home.

  • Ogres – These wonderful beings are not the large, ugly, mean creatures of lore. Rather they are shy. They are clever and creative. They are good at working with their hands and are often the inventors of many items. However, most are what we would call dyslexic, thus shy and insecure, though they are more than willing to share their many inventions and skills.

*** They symbolize a willingness to be open, share, and willingly find a way to solve a problem. To befriend these great beings is to make a quiet friend who will support you during tough times and help create solutions to problems. They are great problem solvers.

  • Unicorns – Often unicorns are pictured as white horses with a forehead horn. However, they do come in a variety of colors with their picturesque horns. Though their horn can be shadowed when they are on our side of the veil with only a very few able to see their sacred horn. They are considered a symbol of utmost purity.

*** They symbolize purity, innocence, freedom, belief in magic, and faith in the rightness of the universe. If you are privileged to have a unicorn with you, you are blessed. They bring to you a belief in your own magic, remind you to have faith in the powers of the universe, and know the innocence in owning your own power and connection with spirit.

Both Mystical and Earthen Born

  • Axolotl – Some mystical animals only exist in the other realm. Many believe you cannot see mystical animals in our everyday life. Not so with these very shy earthen creatures. It is said they are the offspring of an Aztec fire god, who were transformed into Axolotl in punishment for their extremely self-centered actions with the belief they are greater than dragons. They quickly learned to hide from people who began to notice their natural magical abilities and went looking for them. They are the most researched yet least known about animals, with the most magical ability to perfectly regenerate body parts.

*** They symbolize the ability to find greatness even from tragedy. When you offer them care, conversation, and freedom, they willingly share their magic. They show an ability to transform and regenerate with ease. Allow their magic to flow to you.

  • Cicadas – These beings are represented in many cultures, though most commonly in Native American and Greek lore. They are believed to bless crops by bringing an abundant yield by letting it be known when crops are ready for harvest. For an insect, they have an unusually long life span and have thus become symbolic of immortality.

*** These insects symbolize those who only occasionally share their skills when welcomed into their realm, Longevity, wealth, foretelling, and the bringers of good news.

  • Octopi – These amazing creatures have three hearts and nine brains. Two of the three hearts are peripheral and pump blood through the gills, while the central heart circulates blood to the rest of the body. The three hearts provide the octopus with the power to maintain their sensitive nature and energy to help others while living a solo existence. When their internal system supports their higher purpose, the ability for them to live as they are meant demonstrates their magical mystical connection. They also have nine brains, one for each appendage and their center, with all the ability to work cooperatively together which is responsible for their legendary intelligence and adaptability. A sign of their intelligence is their ability to solve problems, to be able to camouflage and to use tools. They are guardians of the seas.

*** These wonderful beings symbolize cleverness, health, and watchfulness. They bring to you all this and more. They will show how to be protected, solve problems, and how to multitask.

  • Echidnas and Tenrecs – These spiritual beings are two spiny creatures that hold interesting spiritual powers and strengths. These two beings come from both the Earthen and Mystical realms. The depth of introspection comes from their position in the Mystical realm, and their Earthen powers strengthen adaptability and compatibility. Both of these spiny animals offer self-protection from the outside world, the use of keen instincts, the ability to overcome challenges, and self-strength, as well as peace, simplicity, and creativity. For protection, these beings were used to line the outsides of homes.

*** They specifically symbolize mystery, introspection, and adaptability. They present courage, strength, instinct, and the ability to overcome challenges to those they work with. The echidnas represent insight through deep introspection and courageous willingness to be adaptable. They often provide comfort with independence, being resourceful, and meeting challenges with grace and strength. These spiny beings are interesting spirit beings that encourage deep introspection in preparation for adaptability and change. Pay attention to the messages the echidnas and tenrec bring and be open to exploring the new.

  • Hummingbirds – These magical beings are a symbol of the boundless joy they bring. They are in near-constant motion. It is a reminder that energy can be boundless. For some, seeing a hummingbird signals challenges to come but with each challenge, the healing has already begun. They may also be a symbol for loved ones near and dear. They often come in dreams to share their messages.

*** These tiny fliers have great spiritual significance by being an inspiring sign of hope, good luck, joy, and energy.

  • Dragonflies – The mythological presence of dragonflies is shown throughout our imaginative spirit and holds spiritual significance. These gentle creatures touch all the elements during the different stages of life; they are born in water, crawl onto land to live (earth), dry in the energy of the sun (fire), and navigate life as they live with the sky (air). This shows a versatility and ability to fit into many settings. They serve as a symbol of the positive qualities of courage, transformation, joy, and adaptability, all while maintaining the connection between physical and spiritual realms.

*** These spiritual animals represent having wisdom and the resilience to adapt to change.

  • Butterflies – These wonderful beings spiritually show an ability to encompass transformation, rebirth, and personal growth. They are an example of self-journey, discovery, and growth because of your ability to change and evolve during your process. Butterflies symbolize freedom, lightness, and joy. They want us to remember not to hold too tightly to our burdens so we can embrace a sense of personal liberation.

*** These animals remind us how some growth requires transformational change from lowly crawling to cocooning in quiet to finally brilliantly flying. Change is not easy. However, the ability of the butterfly to fly requires leaving the comfort of the cocoon. Self-discovery holds your personal, brilliant flight.

  • Pink Fairy Armadillo – This little mysterious creature is the smallest armadillo species in the world, endangered, illusive, and arguably the cutest. About the size of a dollar bill, the pink fairy armadillo is a nocturnal creature from central Argentina. It isn’t actually a fairy, but it may be just as hard to study. It spends most of its life underground, and sightings in the wild are so rare that one armadillo researcher worked in its habitat for 13 years without ever coming across one. The faeries graced this little one with its unique color in honor of a rescue performed. The armadillo came upon a playful group of fae youths, outside the veil, too busy in their play to be aware of the thundering footsteps approaching them. The lowly little armadillo, hearing the approaching group came out of its hiding hole to surround the youths before burrowing, with them, back into the earth. The fairies were overjoyed to have their youths rescued. They honored the little armadillo and all offspring in fairy pink in appreciation.

*** These creatures bring the gift of remembering it’s alright to have a tough shield and retreat inward to avoid danger, especially when you need extra emotional or psychic protection from unwanted or unnecessary criticism or harassment from others. Remember to take care of yourself first, in balance, before taking care of others.

I hope you enjoyed learning about these very few of many mystical magical beings. I love to hear about them and share what I hear and learn about them. There are so many, and all are my favorite. Which is yours?
