With summer just around the corner, there are a few things to consider when living with pets.

Are your pets outdoors a lot or mostly indoors? Outdoor pets are more easily exposed to pests that can carry disease, create irritations, or cause allergic reactions. Also, summer may bring allergies to your pet.

You are asked again to be your pet’s advocate. Do you believe it’s best to follow the guidelines given by your veterinarian, or do you choose to take an alternate or combined approach to your pet’s care?

If you want an alternative for preventative care, find a practitioner who can offer different solutions. There are often various possibilities, so you can decide on the one or combination that works best for you. Alternatives may include the use of essential oils, flower essences, diatomaceous earth, gemstones, herbs, and other methods—usually a combination of a few of these things.

Another consideration is that there are many outdoor products used to repel or kill bugs, treat weeds, and clean water. A pet can easily have a negative reaction—or even become seriously ill—when exposed to harmful chemicals used outside. Try to be aware of what is used in the areas where you bring your loved one.

What’s really important is to watch how your pet reacts to whatever you try and wherever you bring them. And above all, you are their protector, their guardian, and the one to choose what is best for you, them, and your lifestyle.

Be your pet’s advocate. Decide what you believe is the best direction for their summer care. Take good care of them so they can easily give you their love and companionship. And most of all—enjoy your summer with your pet.
