One very easy way to support your own healing and the healing of others is to hum. Hard to believe?
Humming is a simple tool that has been scientifically shown to trigger physiological changes in the body. It primarily stimulates the vagus nerve and supports the production of nitric oxide.
The vibration created by humming activates the parasympathetic nervous system through vagal stimulation, encouraging the body to shift into a relaxed state. It can also increase nitric oxide levels significantly compared to quiet breathing. This supports the widening of blood vessels and improves oxygen flow throughout the body. As a result, heart rate and blood pressure may lower, while sinus airflow between the nasal passages and sinuses can improve.
Humming is one of the easiest ways to bring the benefits of music into your life. Music itself has many health-supportive effects, but many people feel intimidated by the idea of musical performance. Listening to music is helpful, but engaging in musical expression can offer additional benefits. Humming is considered a form of musical performance.
The best part is that humming requires no training. You do not need lessons, you do not need to read music, and you do not need to be “on key.” You can hum anywhere, at any time, in a way that feels natural and accessible.
Music in general has been shown to support stress reduction, improved mood, increased exercise endurance, better sleep quality, enhanced cognitive function, and even improved sleep in animals. It can help regulate emotions, lower blood pressure, and increase motivation through dopamine release.
If you only feel comfortable humming in private, such as at home or in your car, that is perfectly okay. However, when you choose to hum in public, you are participating in a form of shared healing. And when others join you, it becomes a spontaneous collective healing experience.
Humming naturally elevates mood. You do not need words, lyrics, or musical skill. To hum, gently close your lips without clenching your jaw, keep your throat relaxed, and breathe from your lungs as you allow air to pass through your vocal cords, creating a soft “hmmm” sound.
That is it. You are humming.
You may even find that others feel invited to join you.
Happy humming.
