It’s much easier to invite the fae into your home than it is to know for certain when they’re actually there. While inviting them can be done in many ways, recognizing these quiet or sly beings is a bit more elusive.

To begin, it’s important to clear up some common misconceptions.

One I hear most often is: It’s alright to give gifts, but do NOT accept gifts from the fae.

This holds limited truth. Imagine always giving gifts and never being able to receive one in return. Like people, the fae offer gifts with a range of intentions. Some give with joy and celebration. Others may offer gifts that come with hidden strings. If you sense a gift carries obligations or feels off, don’t accept it. But if a gift is offered in joy and with openness, refusing it can be seen as insulting. Why would a fae who made a heartfelt offering want to stay if it’s rejected? Use your intuitive sense to discern whether the gift is freely given—and then choose whether to accept it.

The fae aren’t so different from humans. Most seek harmony with nature, live peacefully, and value community. And just like people, there are a few who are mischievous—or even less benevolent. If you are in tune with energy, you may be able to feel the heart of an individual being. If not, you’ll need to decide if you want to begin from a place of trust or with careful caution.

Another common misconception lies in their personalities. People often believe fairies, pixies, elves, and sprites are good—while trolls, dwarves, and gnomes are bad. Or that borrowers are thieves. These generalizations are misleading. While certain groups have common traits, no group is inherently evil. For example, trolls often prefer solitude, but that doesn’t make them wicked. And not all pixies are jealous, as one story might have claimed. Borrowers aren’t thieves—they survive by taking only what seems unnecessary in the household and often leave something in return. They may offer gifts or exchanges, but misunderstandings arise when those gifts go unrecognized.

It’s important to develop an understanding of the general traits of the fae group you hope to welcome. But even then, remember they are individuals—just like us—and should not be judged as a whole.

Ask yourself: Who would you like to attract? What are you willing to welcome into your space? What are your boundaries? Are you truly open to sharing your home and energy with the fae?

Then reflect on how you begin relationships or friendships with others. What are your usual actions? How do you approach new people? These habits can guide your way in approaching the fae.

One lovely way to invite them in is to offer gifts.

There are many thoughtful gifts that celebrate and nurture a relationship with the fae. Some ideas include:

  • Leaving out fruits and vegetables
  • Offering tea or honey
  • Singing songs to them
  • Reading aloud a story they might enjoy
  • Hanging wind chimes or shiny decorations indoors or outdoors

Be imaginative, and when you give, do so with intention. Tell the fae that this gift is for them.

There are many ways to invite the fae—think about which group you’d like to visit you, and how you feel most comfortable expressing your welcome. Then watch closely. Some may simply pass through, while others may choose to linger longer.
