The first magic was women’s magic. Women believed in the power of calling on universal law to enhance life for first their children, then other objects in their life. This magic is ancient, predating earthen practices Christianity, and other forms of organized magic. Long ago women discovered what was universal law and how to work with this law to help enhance life.

Women used things that were easily available, like ropes, cords, and thread, to tie good intentions to an object. As their desire to continue to use intention to bring forth good increased, they advanced to using amulets, talismans, charms, and other forms of magic to call in stronger magic.

Like knots, these forms of calling in magic had a similar intent. And like knots, often when intent was called in, it was done with a personal or group ceremony.

As well, like knots, the practice evolved over time to become more and more intricate. It was also easier and longer lasting to wear an amulet, talisman, charm, or something similar than it was to wear a knotted thread.

Depending on the dress, a rope belt may not be as appropriate as an item worn around the neck, under clothing, carried, or a symbol woven within clothing.

As said, women’s magic was not limited to knots.

Differing groups of women began creating fancier knots and including symbols they believed strengthened the magical connections created between universal source, intended, and intention. These new symbols were believed to give the women more power to create more advanced, advantageous and more clearly defined intentions.

This new method was perceived as especially beneficial when the ability to wear their intentions could be done in secret as needed. These new practices began the use of amulets, talismans, sigils, and other forms of protective curiologics to be a part of women’s magic.

The oldest forms of curiologics used symbols to represent words, thoughts, and ideas. The first representations were the use of knots tied into a cord or rope to hold words or phrases of intention, according to universal law to be used for positive intent.

The practice expanded to identifying items in nature that were believed to bring forward good, such as a four-leaf clover, a rabbit’s foot, bells, and shells. Then the words began to represent phrases and pictures that would be used to hold a spiritual calling to bring together the intended receiver with positive intent. From then on, the practice developed even further.

When these methods were first begun, the definitions of amulet versus talisman versus charm were not refined and, as such, were completely interchangeable. It was over time that differing groups decided to refine and define each practice. For the purpose of honoring the original women’s magic, the methods, techniques, and uses I describe will be interchangeable. However, for identification, the group will be referred to as amulets.

This group of amulets used various curiologics to represent the words, phrases, and thoughts of the calling’s intention.

In brief, the main elements of a calling are:

1) the originator, 2) who the calling is meant for, 3) what universal source is asked to be the base, 4) what other things will be asked to fortify the call, and 5) the actual intention.

Most importantly, the different forms of intention calling, for this piece, are grouped together, based on the original belief that a calling, whatever method is applied, must be to enhance and for good. Less than good can bring back unwanted results. Good desires bring good, whereas calling harm may bring some of the same back. It is important to keep all in high regard.

The originator is the person who is designing the calling. They are the one who creates the entire calling based on a desired outcome. They can begin at any place in the process. However, usually, it’s most advantageous to start with defining what the desired intention is. The originator may be referred to as the intentional caller. When creating the intention, the most important consideration is how the calling of an intention aligns with the object of the intention.

Any person or item connected to the caller can be the receiver. When originated, the intended receiver has to have a connection with the creator of the calling. To have an unknown party craft and formulate a calling not only weakened the calling but did not come from a place of pure intent. The center of the created intention is the one who is to receive the results. All the other parts of the calling are there to provide a base, support, and enhance the intention. With high newborn mortality, the focus object began with a newborn child. Then the intentions expanded to include family, children, loved ones, family members, friends, livestock, and other family animals, until it as well included home and household items.

The universal source is any spiritually earthly being or element or divine elemental source that the caller includes to provide a base of support for the intention.

The divine spirits were asked to use their power to support the desired outcome. Spiritually earthen beings and elements include the elements (air, fire, earth, water), animals that were considered magical (eagles, lizards, dolphins, and the other spirit animals of that region), other spiritually believed earth forms (mountains, certain trees, etc.). The perceived strengths and powers of the source formulate the base strength the intention is concocted around.

Most obscure are what other things may or may not be included as a part of the calling. Other things are such items as stones, symbols, pictures, the abbreviated phrase, wood, metal, or whatever other items the designer chooses to also support and provide strength to the intention calling.

First and foremost is the intention. What desire does the designer want to cast for their intended receiver? In the original knots tying practice, the intentions were simple words and small phrase requests. The intention is an affirmation of goodwill, protection, vernal well-being, positive desire, or the like. The affirmation or intention was to be worded as a confirmation or assertion stated as if it was already a current state.

An example would be for a person who is anxious, “I am calm” and not “I am no longer anxious.” The intention was to be created with only positive present form so all that also supported the intention could provide appropriate support. And lastly, not all intentions were infinite. So, when wording the intention, not only is positive intent necessary but also it needs to be decided if it is a permanent or temporary intention.

In the final creation of the intention to be called forward, amulets, talismans, charms, and such all had a curiologic or a picture or symbol that represented the words or phrase of the intended desire. An intention offers the greatest support when it is well thought out, to be present tense, positive, complete but not too limiting, and have an indication of the timeline.

Women used what was available to them as well as designing other ways to craft the design. The intention became represented by a depiction. The women used current images or drawings, current symbols, written language, like runes, and a personally designed casting board. The intention phrase was then designed from what was available to the individual women and the resources available for a curiologic picture or symbol known to the originator. Most designs were line-drawn or carved. If other resources were available the amulet may have used metal, something from nature, or even thread to create the symbol.

The design usually included some image that represented the source and the intention phrase. In creating the intention phrase, women used an image that was connected to a word (four leaf clover, shell, etc.), a drawing of a significant item included in the phrase, and actual alphabet and word methods. Just like runes are a word alphabet, so are some of the other images used. The women were very creative in what they used to represent the image(s) of the intention to be called.

Today often an alphabet board or chart is used to create the design for the amulet.  When using this method the phrase is written out. All vowels are crossed out, as may be all repeat consonants. Some symbols use the first letter of each word in the phrase. There are as many other methods as the originator designs to use.

Once the amulet has been created, there is a ceremony to call together each part of the intention: the supporting source, who the intention is to support, acknowledgment to all supporting items, and the phrase.

The ceremony may be private and personal or within the presence of a small support group. The paper the phrase is written on is usually destroyed so no other can alter the intention. It may be burned, buried, torn to shreds, or however the originator decides.

In the ceremony, the intention in its entirety is called to enhance an object, living or treasured through appealing to an appropriate source to support a positive request for the intended. Held together by an amulet, it’s a calling in good intention for protection, well-being, or goodwill. Then the amulet is worn or kept in an appropriate location, like in a home, sleeping area, or someplace that carries significance for the intended.

Usually, the phrase is repeated three times in accordance with universal law. The person responsible for the calling may choose to repeat the phrase for a different number of times if they choose.

The amulet’s curiological symbol is created in a variety of different ways. Originally there was no specific formula, as there generally is today depending on the particular practice followed.

Creating the curiologic symbol may be an object from nature. When something from nature, it is considered a single intent calling determined by the specific item, like good luck of a four leaf clover or an S for strength, carved in a piece of wood. More commonly, it’s a depiction of the chosen phrase. When using a phrase, write out the phrase. Cross off all vowels and repeat or sequential consonants. With the letters left, the alphabet board may be used or the used in a creatively designed manner. Though it’s not essential to invoke a source, it is common in the original creation of amulets and when designed a depiction of the source is used. Or the creator may simply use symbols that invoke the desired energy of the calling. Most amulets and curiologics were a line drawing. It is recommended that no more than three callings be used in any one amulet and generally only one, with occasionally two intentions set. Whether one or up to three intentions, some amulets are done by a layering process. The source is then placed on the bottom in support, with the specific intention, one or more, placed on top.

There are many symbols that can be used. Runes, elemental, earth, angelic or other symbols created or already existing can be used.

For example, if the phrase is “I am calm,” cross off the vowels and then the extra consonants; that leaves M-C-L. If this seems, because of the smaller number of pieces you want to work with, include the other M. Then, with a letter board or grid, wrap a wire around the letter on the board to create the curiologic. Or take the consonants and put them together in whatever creative way you choose. It’s symbolic, so the end result needs to be pleasing to you. It does not need to have an exact predestined look. In this particular curiologic an oval or eye image may be one of the layers to represent yourself or the person receiving the intention. Or a piece of hair may be included to tie the intention to the intended Item.

And the one creating the amulet can include items like stones, hair, etc., that support the intention’s request.

Here are some examples of already existing symbols that can be used:

Other images used include curves = calm, line = ongoing, circle = contained, triangle = divine, broken line = as needed, spiral = changing with intent, straight line jagged = precise, and curved mountains = to protect during good and bad times.

Here are examples of letter/alphabet boards and how a symbol might be created:

These alphabet lines may also be curved to soften the intention symbol. As well, to keep the intention private, the position of the letters on the wheel can be adjusted at the caller’s wishes. Or use a picture of flowers, the tree of life, or other items that you have an appropriate meaning for that support the intention.

If the intention is to ask water to assist with holding an anxious person calm, the intention might be, “On calm waters (or flowing waters) I am calm.” The amulet symbol may look like either of these and may include stones to embellish and strengthen the intention.

There are several ways to create amulets for good intention, protection, well-being, goodwill, and the like, based on how and what the one creating wants. Use imagination, with good intention, asking a source (if you want) to create a piece that is appealing and purposeful. It is an act of good intention. How wonderful to create an intention for yourself or another.
